Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
